Sustainability is fast becoming the most important topic of conversation as we learn more and more about how our actions have an impact on the environment. But it’s not just about making mindful choices with your actions, but with the resources you use too!

Here are 5 simple tips for the eco conscious gardener seeking a more sustainable, environmentally friendly way to garden.

Make your own compost
Composting is a very effective, environmentally friendly way to reuse kitchen waste. It is also a great way to ensure your plants get the nutrients they need.
You will need to ensure that you get the right balance of materials to feed the organisms which produce compost. 25 – 50%  soft green materials such as grass cuttings, vegetable peelings, weeds and leaves, with the remainder being harder woody materials like wood chippings and prunings. Add a good helping of worms and away you go!

Conserve water
Water conservation is an important step in sustainability, many plants require lots of hydration. Simple steps could be to use waste water that has not been contaminated with detergent or fats to water your plants. Alternatively you could transfer water coming from drainpipes into a water butt.

Plant native plants
Plants that are indigenous to your area are more likely to be hardier towards the weather regional conditions. They will therefore require far less maintenance than exotic imported plants, which cost more and often end up being replaced. Imported plants will also have a much larger carbon footprint. In addition, native populations of birds and insects will use them for food and shelter.

Avoid chemical pesticides
Protect wildlife and use organic pest control such as introducing natural predators. This will help protect bees, birds, butterflies and hedgehogs etc. and get rid of garden pests naturally. You could also plant small shrubs or ground cover as these will shade the soil from sunlight and help reduce the weeds.

Choose planters that are sustainable
GRP planters are frost proof, rust proof and durable and will last for over a hundred years. However, GRP planters manufactured by Europlanters are also made from ‘green resin’ A resin which contains recycled plastic bottles diverting them from landfill and oceans. Read more about it here!
