Where should I hand my hanging planter?
Most hanging planter plants will thrive in a sunny position however, they will need more watering here. If you have a shady position, make sure you choose plants that thrive in a shady location. Your hanging planter is also best placed in a sheltered position to protect the plants from too much wind.  

Which plants should I choose for my hanging planter?
This would depend on the season you are planting your hanging planters. The following suggestions will hopefully inspire you for each season.

Spring
Plants that withstand lots of water and even the odd frost, such as Pansies, mini Daffodils, Primroses and Bellis.

Summer
Petunias are a great way of filling your hanging planter full of flowers fast. However, you could add a mix of Fuchsias, Begonias and Geraniums, this will add lots of variety and colour. Note Best: Fuchsias are good in shady locations whereas Geraniums prefer full sun.

Autumn / Winter  
Violas are great for Autumn hanging planters as they add lots of autumnal colour, add Cineraria Silver Dust for a contrasting background. Small hardy plants are better for winter such as Heathers, Skimmia and Heucheras, add dwarf bulbs which will add interest towards the Spring.

How do I plant my hanging planter?

You will need:

• A hanging planter of your choice
• Large pot to support your hanging planter whilst planting.
• Compost
• Suitable plants
• Drainage media (such as Hydroleca )
• Root refresher (optional Read more) and a bucket of water to soak it in
• Gloves

Steps

1. If using root refresher, put this to soak in bucket of water
2. Add hydroleca or other drainage media such as pea gravel or broken pottery to the bottom of your hanging planter
3. Add some compost, up to approximately half way.
4. Water the plants that you are going to plant up
5. Add root refresher (skip this step if not using)
6. Fill the hanging planter to the top with compost
7. Add plants, making sure that any trailing plants are planted to the sides  / edges
8. Once planted, water well and leave to get established for a couple of days before hanging.

Top Tips
Feed weekly with liquid plant food
Remove any dead flower heads to encourage new growth
Check the soil daily and water as required – make sure soil is not too wet or dry
